I read somewhere that the kidneys could be damaged by holding in farts, but a brief spot of googling yielded no confirmation. On the contrary, a Wikipedia article states:

"Emperor Claudius passed a law legalizing farting at banquets out of concern for people's health. There was a widespread misconception that a person could be poisoned by retaining farts."

It's not dangerous, but if you hold them in too long, they double back and end up in your brain.

As long as you dont hold them in continually.  Farting is healthy  we all need to do it and we all do it I bet even the queen lets rips

They can be quite dangerous on the outside.

In the 1970s a Dutch vet lit a cow's fart (I don't know why).  The fart set fire to a bale of straw.  The bale set fire to the barn and the barn set fire to the farmhouse.

It was reported at the time in a newspaper, but I have lost the cutting.

You might be able to hold them in all day but at night when you are asleep and relaxed the gas will be expelled.  I can also tell you that when there is a bowel obstruction untreated for some time the faecal matter will back up and be vomited out so you can imagine that held in farts might come back out as belches and well frankly I reckon that would be worse!

It's not bad nor dangerous, but it is fun, particularly if you can hold it in until a certain colleague comes into the room whereupon let it fly with silent gusto and blame him.
