Go with Jno, if you completely rest it you could end up seizing up. I've had a few brushes with sciatica symptoms, not through disc wearing but through piriformis syndrome, with that I neck some tramadol wait half an hour and then start moving as much as I can and it frees the nerve up and everythings hunky dory.
However, recently, I hurt my back so much it nearly frightened me into going to the doctors. I kept moving and I didn't take any painkillers because I didn't want to do it any more damage. The voltorol gel did not touch it. I do all our manual handling instruction for people moving and handling, and I thought I moved well. It was only during that week that I realised how even I was putting strain on my back. I'm now spending a lot of time doing squats, to improve the strength in my butt.
