It is illegal for anyone to use a mobility scooter that hasn't got a physical impairment of some kind. They ARE legal to be used on the roads but only the class 3 type ( 8mph ). The smaller ones can only cross from pavement to pavement.Insurance is not compulsory, even if used on the road. Ratter15's answers are totally wrong and misleading, although I agree that these rules are often abused.

mackfender, can you show me the legislation than prohibits an able bodied person from using a mobility scooter?
I know Class 3 mobility scooter can be used on the road, I was generalising, I think people on this thread are generally referring to the little scooters that buzz around the supermarkets.
