Listener 4244 At Spes Non Fracta By Chalicea
40 Answers
Persuaded out of a Listener sabbatical by the early posting on the website, I worked my way through this (thankfully) relatively straightforward issue at a steady pace and with just enough enthusiasm.
I haven't got all the misprints, but more than enough to get the instruction, and I appreciated the niceness of the instructions on what to identify. Good stuff all round and my regards to all.
Is there such a thing as a Friday morning club?

Numbers in the grid, good, clean fun (without unnecessary contortions), and consistent clarity of clue and theme right through to the final denouement. I, for one, would welcome regular early Friday postings - it'd free up the weekend and reduce potential domestic friction...
After last week's easy puzzle I was expecting something really tough, but completed this quickly. I spotted the message from the misprints with only 5 misprints identified, which helped quite a lot (I still haven't identified the clue that has the misprint for the 3rd letter).
The other character's pretty obscure so unlikely to be highlighted even without the message, but it all adds to the completeness of the puzzle.

Filled grid and wondering what to do about the instructions but have posted with a request. I am away working in some fairly remote parts of Malaysia for six weeks over the summer. Whilst I'm fairly confident that I'll be able to get hold of the Listener as my Crossword Club membership is still intact, I'm not sure how easy it will to be post a solution back to Mr Green in St.Albans, England. If I get stuck is there any kind soul who would be willing for me to email them a written solution which they could transcribe onto a solution grid and post on for me. Of course if you think my solution is better than yours you could always purloin some answers - and if you are really mean you could always introduce a few printer's devils into mine. Still rather sadly in pursuit of an all-correct year....
If so please email me at [email protected]
There would of course be a choice bottle or two by way of thanks!

Only been doing Listener a short while, preferring Indy / EV but this was a very nice one. Easy but well put together - probably this setter's best as her (?) others can be quite bland with unoriginal devices. Rather 3 or 4 of this quality per year than an excess of those ones. Less is more Chalicea. Congratulations and do keep up the good work.
I haven't posted for a while, due to extreme business. I managed last week's fairly well and enjoyed this one, getting the theme quite easily, but nearly missed out on one of the clashing items due to a mix-up in my mind over one of the clues. All sorted now and in the post. I didn't get 4241 done, apart from grid, but have just looked at solution. Neither did I quite fathom out the numerical one, though I think I was nearly there.
