Yes the mattress can be "disinfected."

the brother had cdifficile last year - but unfortunately didn't disinfect his mattress - it was hard enough to make his bloody bed - haven't heard any thanks from him - so methinks I am done done good bye

Is it a domestic mattress ie no waterproof cover? and what do you mean by "contaminated?" In hospitals hyperchlorite bleach is used against c.diff. High temperature steam used slowly (loads of steam) has been shown to reduce the number of spores. Who would be using the mattress?

I would not take the risk myself. Mattresses can be replaced quite cheaply these days.

I'd be inclined to get a new mattress too and don't forget the mattress protector.

My Mum had this in hospital 17years ago when it was a very uncommon thing to have. The hospital would not let me take her nighties home to wash, we had to wash in disinfectant on entering and leaving (in the days before the santitizing liquid on the wall) and we were advised not to kiss her.
