Quite a difficult one in some sense becasue the MOD do have a duty of care. but:

1) If the families, as they say are just looking for the military to appologize and admit some fault why sue for 1/4M, why not sue for a £1?

2) One of the gripes is they did not have enough ammo. I'm sorry but just how much more could they really have achieved? They were severely outnumbered by an angry mob. Even if they had killed many of the mob that would probably have infuriated them more and they would have still eventually overcome them.

If this wins then the MOD could well end up broke as it will open flood gates for hundred of scum lawyers to make a quick buck (and that before they get into the ECHR eventually).

So should we quit now and simply have a small Island defence force sine any future battle will not be sustainable?

YMG. I agree with you on this one. When our lads and lasses sign up to join our armed forces, they should realise that at some point they may be called upon to fight, and perhaps to die in the process. After all, we no longer have conscripts these days. My sympathy lies with the families but these chaps that died were performing their duties.

Its not as if they fell off a badly secured ladder, on a building site that they were working on....a ladder that management were responsible for.
The idea of splitting banks into 'Good banks' and 'Bad banks' should be applied.

Lets take the armed forces needed to defend the country, add in MI5, GCHQ an updated Border agency and create a Homeland Defence Force.

Then we take foreign operations - peacekeeping forces, aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines and all the fighting foreign wars people seperately.

By accounting for these forces seperately we can see what we are doing to actually keep people like you and me safe in our beds and what we are spending to satisfy the egos of those who are most concerned just with us being seen as a 'World power'.

Disband no - Seriously reform yes

We cant keep wasting money and lives fighting tribesmen on the other side of the world
There's a right to sue, which wasn't clear before, but that doesn't make this case winnable. The courts will be well aware that to let this one succeed will open the army to thousands of actions, of which a vast number will be indistinguishable from this
