A neighbor.....and her neighbor stand by the front door and smoke many times a day.
With the lovely weather we have been having our sitting room smells awful from their smoke so we keep closing the windowa. They are just feet from my apartment.

My husband has COPD and spends hours coughing night after night. Cigarette smoke can start it of as it has tonight. Its almost 2 am here and only now has my husband settled down to sleep.

He asked one of them if they would mind moving further away but met with "mind your own business" from the nearest neighbor.

She hasn't worked in all of the 6 years she has lived their, ironically because she says she suffers from COPD. [ Obviously claiming Benefits] No way would she puff her way through so many cigs if she does.

Has anyone else had a similar situation they have resolved.....can you tell me how you did it.

My husband is over 80 and not in the best of health. He gets many chest infections when we call on a team of respiratory nurses to help him when he has an attack.

Why the hell some people have to be so inconsiderate to others for the sake of their fix of nicotine.

I agree with naomi here. The issue of benefits, whilst annoying, really is irrelevant to the issue. People not smoking in their own homes is a regular sight these days. I'm not sure why they don't just stop smoking altogether, if they find the stench so bad that they don't want it in their own homes. Stopping smoking is made so much easier these days, unlike when I...

My sypathies to your neighbours.
Where do you get off telling them to move. Its not their fault you're husband's ill. Keep your windows shut and stop speculating about if or why they're on benefits.
I have had COPD for years, up until last October I used to smoke 30 to 40 a day. Saying she wouldn't smoke if she had COPD is beyond stupid really as smoking is the main cause of the condition.
inconsiderate neighbours maybe, but what is the hassle in keeping your windows closed? you've asked them to move and they have refused....what else is there to do/say? whether she is on benefits is irrelevant and a little judgmental on your part, imho....

They are smoking in their own garden, if they are on benefits is nothing to do with you or your husband!!
Deary me, such niceness. I actually sympathise with you. This happens here although my neighbour is at least 10 yards away and his smoke comes into my house at night, and we have to keep doors and windows open in 37º heat. Alas there is nothing you can do about it.
I sympathise to. People are inconsiderate of others it would be neighbourly of them to consider a polite request not to smoke near your window I would ask the same so I understand where your coming from. Smokers seems to be the worse for selfish things as I know from some I know, hope you can sort this out for your husband.
I don't think he meant "moving further away" as moving house? Just asking them not to smoke right outside the window. I don't know if they understand your husband's problem, but it might be worth having one more friendly word with them. The nicer you are about it, the more likely you'll get a good response, as you are asking for a favour, really( assuming they're smoking on their own property). If not, i don't think there's anything more you can do.
it is a shame when you don't get on with your neighbours mine are great they were even tapping on the wall to the beat of the music, i wish she would get the words right, she shouted oh god but she should be shouting thunder

it was at 1-45am so she was probably a bit tired and got the wrong song

Something very similar to this has been posted before about neighbours smoking in their front garden and smoke wafting through windows.

I can't see what you can do except keep your windows closed. It's their garden. Whether or not they're on benefits is irrelevant.
This sort of question has been asked before. Try a search for it.

Ultimately though they have a right to smoke outside their own door so if you've asked and they are not on good enough terms to find a compromise then all you can do is close the window when you need to.

Don't think I wish to comment on the implied welfare fraud though.

Maybe you could use the back room if it is that bad, and open the window there instead ?
its a shame they aren't more considerate but there is nothing you can do.

how they pay for their ciggies is irrelevant.

Ah, an iconsiderate smoker or two,
How unusual!

^^ iNconsiderate ^^^ . . . .doh!

Stopping smoking is made so much easier these days, unlike when I gave it up 36 years ago. You can even get anti-smoking help on prescription.

Here in Wales, smoking now accounts for only 24% of the adult population, which is much better than years ago, but we now have the hard core left. It always puzzles me somewhat that the people who can least afford to smoke are the ones most likely to do so. Education is needed. We still have some to go it would seem.

Cupotee...my sympathy to you. Not sure what advice to offer, beyond the fact that this wonderful summer, with its high temperatures won't last forever, so you will be able to close the windows soon. What a pity you have such ignorant neighbours.

cigs and baccy sales down

there must be loads who have taken up origami as cigarette paper sales are booming -)
What a nice world it would be if Cupotee could have explained MrC's condition and the neighbours had smiled and just moved down the garden a little.
I know....I live in cloud cuckoo land....but it's nice here....:-)
