An advert for WidowDating.co.uk has bee banned by the Advertising Standards Agency after a woman complained that none of the men referred to her were widowers. The company said anyone could join and the site wasn't exclusively for widows [The Times]

Hang on; what is the attraction of widows or widowers? Why would anyone be demanding that as a prerequisite?

I think that someone who has been in a reasonably long term relationship with someone who has died is going to be somewhat different from a divorcee or someone single. You're probably never going to completely 'move on' from that relationship and they will still be part of who you are and you'll still want to remember them fondly on a regular basis. That may be...

More chance the widowed are financially self-sufficient?
One might say the say about uniforms. These sites just look for a gimmick to make them stand out. Although maybe a widow/widower might imply someone who sticks to a relationship and is now single through events rather than being single because they have something that puts folk off.
Empathy as to the loss of a spouse maybe ?
I recall seeing a Scottish Widow on the TV that would have attracted me.
No ex husbands/wives to worry about.
Maybe the lady was looking for someone who would understand her feelings of loss and grief - although I do think she has misunderstood the concept of the site - it apparently confirms that it is not excluively for individuals who have lost married partners.

Similar is the 'uniform' dating site - it offers a service for people who are attractted to people who have a uniform profession, but it is not a requirement to be a member of a uniformed profession to sign up.

That's got me thinking ...

If I ask for Shirley Eaton in Carry On Nurse, what are my chances?

Between vanishingly small and zero ?
O_G......Is this the lady. :-

Video not working for me, but Google finds loads of images.
If it's Amanda Lamb, then she did do wonders for the image of 'Scotish Widows' it has to be said!
There seems to have been a fair few of them. See it's the widow status (and cape) that does it.

I would imagine that the appeal, for some, of a Widow dating site would be that you could bag yourself a rich widow / widower and marry them just prior to them keeling over and leaving you all their hard earned cash.

Interesting question:

One first of all has to ask "what is the function of Dating Agencies, online or otherwise?

1) To meet someone of the opposite sex(usually) with a view to a meaningful and symbiotic relationship (Love I think it is called)

2) To find an extra marital relationship in an effort to inject some excitement and sex into a stale and sterile marital existence.

Now if one was looking for option1, then the title WidowDating may well be appropriate, but if Option 2 was the interest then the title "WidowDating may well be inappropriate, or "off putting.

There is no clear cut demarcation of the two options as at any time, under any circumstance Option 2 may overflow into Option1 and vice versa.

Is your husband dead? Did he leave you any money? Answer the second question first. [Groucho Marx's take on it, addressing the widowed character played by Margaret Dumont]

You're probably never going to completely 'move on' from that relationship and they will still be part of who you are and you'll still want to remember them fondly on a regular basis.

That may be something that a new partner may have difficulty coming to terms with and feel that they're somehow competing with a ghost.

So I can quite understand how people who've had such difficulties would find the idea of meeting someone in a similar situation attractive
Fred....LOL.
Some years ago, there was a nightclub in Watford that advertised their wednesday nights as "Grab a Granny" night.......
What happens when you discover that your newly found widow is a serial widow who has dispatched five husbands to an early grave?

On a totally different topic - I once interviews a guy who had come to the UK from Canada. He had worked in a place where all the staff were Bipolar. Not sure how that would work.

@@Andrew1707 - Hello. I hope you are working hard to earn money so that you can pay your taxes so that you can support who are too fluxed to work for a living.
:-) And I thought I was cynical.
So ~ what about these sites? They are probably okay but who would want to date a tick?
