I have a very bright 7 year old granddaughter . I know all grand parents say that, but I was a teacher , she was reading at 4, is top of her class and is computer literate. So that is why I claim she is bright and it's not just the opinion of a silly old granddad .

My dilemma is what device should I buy her. There is such a range of iPads, tablets etc and they become obsolescent so quickly that it's a difficult choice. Is it better to buy something cheap each year than say buy the current top of the range OTP device, whatever that appears to be.

I'm not technical, so I'm sure you'll get some better answers. Mine have 7" tablets from Amazon which were £50. My children are between ten and fifteen (17 year old has a laptop) and they are all very happy with them. Not too expensive to replace/ update either. I've seen a few posts here recommending Kindle Fire, which means she could also download books if she likes reading. However smart she is, she is still 7, so i would be wary about spending a fortune on something that might get lost or broken- her friends might want a go, too!
the iPad is very easy to update to the latest software. So a three year old iPad runs the exact same software as the new one.

There will be new iPad models next month (and probably other Tablets as well) so I would wait a few weeks before making a purchase.
