Whilst doing exceptionally well with his studies in his short time in England, (for which he must be very much praised), is there any reason why his family should also be granted permission to stay?

No. He and his family have to return, although it looks as though he can apply for a student visa.
Well done him, but there are plenty of students at Oxbridge whose families live overseas. Unfortunately he will have to become one of them.
Surely it says more about the standard of A levels than it does of him.......any way...well done him.
Fair play to this young man who has appplied himself brilliantly.

As his family left Syria 2 years ago, why must they be deported to Afghanistan?
Shouldn't they return to the country from which they came?
Conditions in Syria presently mean that no one should be returned there until the crisis is over, so surely they ought to be allowed to remain until stability returns?

Well done him,
But as part of a family of failed Asylum (there's no N on it) seekers,
Which surely makes him an Illegal,
Why is he allowed to stay?
No (Next!) Plenty of students get into Oxford when they live abroad. There's no reason to allow them to stay , so why should their families ,who have no right of abode, stay here?
There is more to this than meets the eye...............2years learning English, straight A's and then offered a place at Oxford......???

Bit odd don't you think?
Won't Oxford be able to charge more for tuition if he's classed as foreign student? Ker-ching!

@Sqad

Probably been learning English off the BBC World service, from an early age.

Why are ABers so fixated about Asylum seekers/immigrants?
Why sqad?

I find it a bit odd that he thought with better English (DM spin?) his grades would be much better - he got As and A*s - how does it get much better?

////'I didn't speak a word of English and it was really hard work, especially in the first year.////

So he picked up English in 2 years.
Octavius...why what?
Chemistry, Physics and Maths don't require the same degree of understanding a 'tongue' as they are pure 'languages' themselves.

He tape-recorded his lectures and played them back to make sure that he understood what was said.
Why ..... is it odd ?
Well, in my day and I presume it still is the case, entrance examination to ANY UK university is dependent upon a broad base of subjects and not just the subjects that one is going to study at University.
Octavius, perhaps "odd" is the wrong word....."amazing " would be a better word and for the reasons that I have given in my above thread in answer to JTH.
There is NO Entrance Examination into OU.

He appears to have satisfied the A-Level Grade requirements OU attached to his offer.

I believe they came from Iran originally, so I think it would be safe for them to return there.
Bazile.......I don't know what i believe..............that is very impressive and couldn't have been done in my era.....BUT....things have changed.

To get A's in your Higher School Cert in 3 subjects was outstanding, now you see pupils getting 7-10 straight A's.

I am clearly not comparing like with like.

How very clever of you to spot that little mistake of mine, have you ever thought of becoming an English lecturer at Oxford?
