A spanner light has come on on the dash board of my car.

It generally means it needs servicing. Especially if it's a Renault.
usually time for a service

Does it not tell you in the handbook?
You've lost the toolkit?
I could indicate that component such as a sensor has failed. A plug in diagnostic code reader needs to be used to tell you what's failed and needs attention.
That would be the engine management light ( engine symbol ), a spanner symbol is the time for a service light, Dodger.
It should really come up as a £ sign, as that is what it means.
What do you call a female spanner?

A wench....
It needs a service, you can check how many miles are left before it shouts at you by looking in the car book you got with the car,if you do not have it put it into the web ,it will come up near to the speedo the spanner comes up when you are near the service to remind you,it can be reset without a service but best get it serviced.
