I've just seen some older posts on this subject with mixed results, but mostly saying they don't work. I've been on diclofenac for it x2 daily but to be honest it doesn't seem to do much good either. Yesterday, babysitting my 2yr old gs and running round after him for most of the day resulted in a very swollen and painful knee last night.
I haven't found glucosamine to be much good - and I've taken it for a long time and also combined with chondroitin on a pharmacist's advice. Some of the gels which you rub in I've found helpful. I've got one on prescription but Boots own make is good too. Good luck - knee pain is horrible.
I used to take glucosamine in tablet form only until someone introduced me to the liquid sort mixed with chondroitin, and I can honestly say it has made a HUGE difference to my sore, painful knees, and my lower back and a tendon injury, the tablets didnt touch it, but this liquid is a godsend.

she started taking 3 a day
now she takes one aaday
no side effects
she now can run
no stick
she is 88 yrs now

I use it for my dog which seems to have made a huge difference to her, think it's dog specific stuff from chemeyes so not sure it would be good for humans!
I take the combination capsule (with chondroitin) - doesn't seem to do me any harm, and my kneew are certainly more flexible (but that could be coincidence).
I have started using Ibuprofen Gel which I rub in twice a day. It's a bit too early to tell if it is doing any good yet but I think that you will try anything when the pain is so bad.
As I have said before, I watched a QI programme and Stephen Fry said that " you might as well use LARD as it's the rubbing that does you good not what you rub it with", and what's more Squad agreed with him so it must be right.
Glucosamine works for us to keep age-related aches under control but for anything not touched by Ibuprofen, I get Naproxin from the doctor. My mother used to have Movelat cream or gel and that was good too.
Some said it worked and some said it's a waste. My Mum said it's a waste of money. She took it for about three years and has not seen any change or difference with her aching knee.
I had bad knee problems in my forties from overuse. My knees were clicking and popping and I could not sit for an hour without them locking up.
Glucosamine did nothing for it at all.
I had better results from eating a lot of gelatine based lollies which I believe did more to rebuild the cartilage than any amount of glucosamine ever would.
Finally I worked with an osteopath to stretch the tendons and ligaments after the cartilage recovered.
