Medicine Advice Needed

I have to take the young gent in my avatar to the vet this afternoon (I rather suspect that he knows that we are going as he is hiding) and, although the surgery is up the road, carrying him kills my sore back.
I have lower dose co-codamol tablets. Does anybody know how long they take to start working and how long they work for?
His appointment isn't until three but it wouldn't be the first time that I have been unable to locate him and had to reschedule the appointment.
He screams all the way there and back but cowers like a coward at the surgery - he is there every month.

I think that I have blocked off every entrance to the save cave under my bed. Although they are indoor cats I have a 'flat' on two floors and the stairs are scary when carrying a wriggling and angry moggy.
I usually end up totally freaked out by the time we get to the vet.
When we get home he bolts for safety and then comes to demand food.
Kitties are hard work!
