Do not believe anything
because it is said by an authority,
or if it is said to come from angels,
or from gods,
or from an inspired source.
Believe it only if you have explored it
in your own heart
and mind and body
and found it to be true.
Work out your own path,
through diligence.

I am convinced I already know the truth about not just one but all religions: They are, to each and every one of their adherents, their private opinions/beliefs. I am not inclined to persuade any of them as to the merits or not of those private opinions but what I find objectionable is when they try to insist on dictate on the basis of those opinions that they are right and everyone else is wrong. Worst of all is when religion is used in the exercise of power.
I do not confuse religion with basic cultural customs unconnected to or preceding the religious dimension but it is often difficult to disentangle the two because one is often mixed with the other.
