My Swedish grand daughter in law tells me that you can buy a plastic tube which you put up a babies nose and suck the mucus out.

Not sure why the negative comments on here, people have obviously not seen or used one of these! I bought this: Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation when my baby had a cold and I could not recommend it enough! I found the "bulb" version was complete rubbish. This one has a filter in so no way are you going to get any in your mouth and you can get loads of snot out. My baby...

I've seen them - disgusting.
I was given saline drops for mine- they worked well.

I suppose it would make baby feel better with a clear nose, but this must really show a mothers love for her child.
Yes, it's important, because they only breathe through their nose- but i found the saline did the job.
Aw you sure you don't put the tube up one nostril, and blow ... to clear the other nostril ?
^ lol... didn't get your Biology O Level then?
a bulb syringe?

Well I did'nt know that pixie. They live in Sweden and she was telling me how different things are there. She also says that some medication is given to babes as suppositories and that they have thermometers to put in prams and cots to make sure that they don't overheat. I would'nt have thought that was likely with their climate.
I used to work as air cabin crew.

The emergency first aid kits contained a device for sucking the mucus out of a new born baby's nose, in case of birth in flight.

It was more than a simple tube, it had a contraption in the tube to catch the mucus when you sucked.
Mucus extractor Hopkirk. Only for medical professional use now (probably due to litigation)
Yes, well, it was quite a few years ago.
Yes, they use those after birth still, hopkirk, but not for general sale.
You can buy things here to do the job - google 'np baby nose cleaner'. Can't help thinking you could do some sort of damage with such a thing.
My Spanish daughter in law used a bulb syringe whenever the baby had a blocked up nose. A quick squeeze on the rubber bulb drew the mucus out and the baby was able to breathe ok.
they are used in America at all births to suck out mouth and nasal passages
A bulb syringe sounds much safer than just a piece of tube
Take the baby to the nearest garage and blow it out with the air line. Job done!
Maybe I was lucky but I don't ever remember needing to clear our babies' noses. If they are considered useful for clearing a baby's nose I wonder if some people also use them for clearing a pet's nose or an infirm elderly relative's nose.
I seem to recall my mother using her little fingernail to clear my baby brother's nose
