Big question.........simple answer......

The majority of patients improve and the symptoms disappear within 6-8 weeks on a regime of pain killers and rest........the majority.

However if the above does not occur and they develop weakness in their legs do bladder incontinence then surgery will be required.

The prognosis for surgery depends upon the type of surgery and the expertise of the spinal surgeon.
Sqad, would the left foot 'slapping' down be considered weakness?
Sandy....yes it would.
TY, Sqad. I guess I'll just hirple along for a while 'til it get insufferable.

OK one other question please. How do you know what surgeon you will get and can you request specific ones of you are on the NHS or do you just take what ever gets offered to you?
uk......;-)

If you know which one you want and which one you want to avoid, then let your GP know and there should not be a problem.
