Ive had beards on and off for the last 35 years, usually a full set, ive had the goatee for about 10 months and I'm quite happy with it.

Strange that, I have experienced the same on a few occasions when I have had a full beard and then shaved it off and the only comments were "have you had a hair cut" when I say "No, a shave" they are always surprised that they hadn't noticed.

When I shaved mine off quite a few years ago OHs reaction was "Well that covered a multitude of chins didn't it?"
