removing climber roots

I am trying to dig up well established Virginia Creeper and Ivy roots. They are proving very difficult as they both are extremely close to my neighbours garage wall. Is there anything I can apply to the roots that will kill them off and all thier subsidary roots with no harm to any other plants nearby.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

 use creosote, if you can get it, I used it on the roots of ivy, it never grew back, and the grass grow over it with no problem.

hi bjs, mr p says you could try SBK (special brushwood killer) you can buy it in most garden centres

Hi BJS, there is special ivy root killer you can get, It called " DEEP ROOT" for ivy, it comes in a gel form with a brush. You apply it to the bottom of the growing ivy at ground level, its better than the spray weed killers because it doesn't interfere with the growing plants around the ivy.  :-)
