A "silk Cut" Dilemma

I wonder if any "answerbanker" can help me with suggestions to solve my dilemma. Recently returning from Zante- I brought my sister in law (on request) a pack of ciggies at approx. half the UK price. However, on returning home- she informs me that she has STOPPED SMOKING &, therefore, wont be buying said fags from me!! I don't smoke & no immediate contacts do!! I am not looking to make a profit BUT I would like to get my cigarette funds reimbursed!!!! (I aren't happy with my sister as you can imagine!!) Being the EU - FULL tax duty was paid on the ciggies. However, I am unsure of legal implications regarding advertising said fags here???? Obviously they are a bargain (being half UK price) so I just need a good strategy to unite said fags with a worthy recipient. All GOOD suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Drop down to your local pub,there's bound to be a couple of smokers in there willing to take them off your hands for the right price.

Don`t you have to have a licence to sell cigarettes? If it was me, I`d just ask around to see if anyone wants to buy them. I have a no "Can you get me" policy when I travel and if someone really wants something, I get the money up front. Your SIL asked you to get them so she should pay up IMO

you could hang onto them for a couple of weeks, if your sister lapses then offer to sell them to her at a higher price....

otherwise, down the pub, someone will take them pretty quick

I agree with 237, your SIL really should stump up. I certainly wouldn't advertise them but your contacts of contacts must know Emerson who smokes, I probably know 50+ smokers through work

Dustypuss I have complete sympathy with your predicament as EXACTLY that has happened to me....and you have to bear the loss whilst the favour-asker looks as pleased as punch that they have saved themselves money....

I usually give them to a smoker

yes resale is fraught and I wouldnt try it - it is after all 'only' 200 fags innit ?

The next time you are asked to do someone a favour,

As an ex-smoker I have always refused to buy ciggies for anyone. The cheaper they are the more you will smoke, and the harder it will be for you to give up.

Since you asked about the legalities, I'll point out that supplying them to your sister would have been illegal anyway, so getting rid of them down the pub is no different. (You're only allowed to import tobacco products into the UK, without paying excise duty, if they're for your personal use. The definition of 'personal use' includes bona fide gifts to others, where you receive nothing in return, but providing them 'at cost price' - as you were planning to do - is illegal).

Duty free fags are supposed to be for personal use though. I have known Customs to ask "Are these cigarettes for you? Can you show me your lighter please"? Ooops. For that reason, I wouldn`t buy cigarettes for anyone else.

in a pub not a million miles from me they sell a sleeve (200) silk cut for £45 so if your price is around this you should have no problem
