No idea which heading to put this under, this seemed as good as any.
I've lived in this 1930s house for 8 years and it has a great atmosphere. Several things that I've dropped have been lost, never to be seen again despite extensive and intensive searching of all nooks and crannies. I've always just assumed that I've missed them (earrings, perfume bottle stoppers etc.) and that they have been sucked up by my powerful vacuum cleaner. BUT, this morning several of my collection of wooden boxes fell off the table in the bay window -one, about 4" by 2 and a half and full of earrings and brooches is nowhere to be seen! I have moved absolutely everything and even resorted to looking in the wardrobes and chests of drawers but there is absolutely no sign of it. I'd have thought the top would have come off and the contents be all over the floor as with the other boxes. I don't know what to think.....

I was in the bedroom the whole time, Danny. I knocked the table with the vacuum cleaner hose, the boxes fell off, I turned off the cleaner went to pick up the boxes and one was missing. It beats me!
now that you are sobering up after that bottle of glenfiddich , last night ...hic hic .. try looking on the table in the bay window - you probably find that they are still there i.e. didn't fall off ?
Question Author
Ha, ha. I wish, but no.
perhaps the stuff you thought was in the boxes wasn't there anyway, it had been moved/taken out before they fell off?

Boxtops, there is nowhere else I would put a box full of earrings, brooches etc. except in my bedroom. My other collection of wooden boxes is in the dining room and the box is not there.

catswhiskas - Funnily enough, I have! I am so perplexed by the disappearance that I am leaving no stone unturned however unlikely.
My bet is, and i'm a gambling man, that you'll find it in the very last place you look for it. Always happens.
The same thing has happened to my mobile phone, it is either in this house, or was stolen from my unlocked car while I attended a funeral in Stuttgart last week. I have searched everywhere, and have today had resorted to getting my provider to block the use of its number.
