Feeling Sick/retching
16 Answers
Hi. I have this constant feeling of almost needing to be sick, or retching at the slightest thing. I'm not poorly, don't have sore tummy etc. but I've been feeling like this for a couple of weeks now. I'm struggling to brush my teeth, even just picking up the brush sets me retching. I'm ok drinking, but now I'm starting to feeling this way after eating. The only thing I can describe is that the very back of my tongue feels what I can only describe as slightly thicker! Again, not sore, no sore throat or anything like that. I'm starting to get very anxious now, as being sick is a real phobia of mine and I'm worrying it's becoming psychological more than anything else. I've only actually been sick once a couple of days ago, and it wasn't anything really bad, just on the back of retching once again. Gargling mouthwash, or anything that gets to the back of my throat seems to really set it off. Thanks in advance.

Hi thanks for replies. I'm not on meds, and highly doubt I'm pregnant - I'm 44, one ovary & I've been chipped (implanon) Lol! The heat is not bothering me that much, I've been lucky enough to stay fairly cool so I'm certain it's not that. I'm definitely going to doc as Squad advised, I'm more worried that I'll get a real hang up with it.
I agree chanel5, sounds like me when I was pregnant and I felt like that right from the beginning until I gave birth. My tongue was coated and gross and it was really hard to brush my teeth as it made me retch.
I know you say you doubt it Meg, but I would definitely rule that one out with a test if I were you!

I'd probably go and see a GP if only to put your mind at rest. I'm not medically qualified at all but reading your post, I would also wonder if it might be psychological as you have a fear of vomiting. I've had anxiety problems myself and it causes lots of weird physical symptoms - a friend of mine was convinced for weeks that she had a leaf stuck in her throat, a common anxiety symptom apparently.
OMG I better not be pregnant, doesn't bare thinking about. Prudie: as much as I have a fear of being sick, it's not something I (usually) carry or concern myself with on a daily basis; it's very rare I vomit, usually only when I'm quite ill (or at least that was the case in the past), as I will do my utmost not to be sick, and then the feeling passes - apart from last couple weeks. I'm just becoming more anxious about it lately, as it started quite innocently with the retching upon brushing my teeth one morning, now it can happen if I chew gum, eat etc.
