this might be a silly question but I use olive oil to soften earwax & just wondered what the difference from the olive oil you can buy in a high street chemist to the stuff you use for culinary purposes. Just curious really x

Buy the olive oil from the chemist, there is a difference don't know what, I paid about £2 for some from the chemist for OH's ear. whereas I could have bought a pint of it from Asda.
I've used the ordinary extra virgin cooking type on OH with no problems ;)

I am using the extra virgin stuff at the moment. Its just curiosity that has made me ask. I have a very small ear canal & go to the hospital every 3-4 months to have the wax removed by a vacuum suction method. Maybe Sqad will come along & post his response?
Wow...removed by vacuum suction? That sounds satisfying,....in a creepy kind of way ;)

No difference, olive oil is olive oil , you just need the cheapest for your ears . No point paying for extra virgin cold pressed oil to put into your ears.
Get the basic cheapest cooking olive oil and use that, the stuff from a chemist is expensive because it is in very small bottles , the cost of the bottle is more than the cost of the oil.
also....scroll down to related questions....there's one from 2011 + Sqad has posted on that one ;)

Quality. You can buy/use any cr*p to soften ear wax.
Eddie is correct.......no difference.
This might sound silly but, how do you go about putting it in your ears, do you use a cotton bud to drip it in, then insert cotton wool to stop it running out, and how long do you leave the oil in the ear? Thanks for any answers.
One ear uppermost (head on side) olive oil dripped in until it runs out.
Keep in that position for a minute or so and then put in cotton wool before turning your head and doing the same on the other side.

Yes......the cotton wool does get soaked.

Twice daily for about 2-3 days.

I my opinion.....this is more effective.
When I wer't lad t'only olive thee could get came from t'chemist.
I find it easier, and just as effective, to soak a cotton bud in the olive oil and gently put that in my ear...not shoved right in but far enough so that the olive oil can find its own way right inside. That way you don't get any running out, you dont need to plug your ear with cottonwool, and enough olive oil gets inside to do the job. Far less messy and a much easier way of doing it.
Much more sensible Ethandron.
