Good morning all. Yesterday I escaped from the clutches of the NHS after an 8 day incarceration.
After previous problems with numerous organs and body parts, it seems my gall bladder was feeling neglected and decided that it wanted its turn. Ho hum.
Anyway, one morning early in my stay I was visited by a very senior consultant and a posse of underlings. His bedside manner left much to be desired - he was a very short man with a very big ego. After a cursory prod or two he announced that my problem was constipation. Once I had finished laughing, I told him that constipation was definitely NOT a problem.
He was obviously not used to being challenged or disagreed with by a lowly patient. He glared at me then turned to a minion and said "she has constipation, prescribe an enema."
I looked at the minion and said "I do NOT have constipation, so un-prescribe the enema."
He glared at me once more and then began walking away. After a few paces he turned back, stuck his nose a few inches from mine and said
*You are terribly dehydrated going by the skin on your face" and then flounced off. Bloody cheek of the man!
Another low point in my stay was when I nipped outside for some "fresh air" and a rat ran across my foot. I never knew I could move so fast.
My apologies to Gness who had to endure a conversation on the phone interspersed with the sounds of me throwing up.
Normal doctor patient procedure then. The rat part is a little disturbing. Sometimes I think it's guess work! If you are dehydrated then why would constipation be an issue? If you were let's say 'suffering from diarrhoea' then that might explain the dehydration. Either way it's a little bit rude and intimidating to get so close and then throw an insult like that. Obviously I'm no doctor!
If you have to meet the senior consultant in outpatients again for a follow up you could ask him politely. "Do you have a relative working at this hospital because I'm sure I met him when it ran over my foot on my last visit here"
^^^regarding your "discussion" with the consultant, these people are treated like gods in their profession and none of the minions would dare question their authority,at least you did!although sometimes not to be recommended as it then makes life difficult in the future,so well done.
My uncle was in hospital for over 3 months. One time the consultant came round and was asking questions. He asked how his bowel movements were. My uncle didn't hear the question so the consultant said 'how is your ***'
I found that really insulting. Like he was just some thick Paddy who didn't know what a bowel movement was.
I am not reporting him - I can laugh it off.
I won't be seeing him again as the problem has been properly identified and I am now under a relevant consultant.
I mentioned the rat to a passing security guard and he told me that the previous week one had run up his leg! Argh!
BB, Where I live, to use "she" instead of a persons name, when that person is present, is considered rude as is talking to that person inches from their face.If you don't think that's rude then we must disagree.
