I'm reminded of a local league match I was refereeing. Someone had gone to fetch the (only) ball, which had been kicked out of play down a long hill, so we were all stood around waiting for its return. A spectator on the touch line, next to me, said "Did tha' Dad gi' thee that badge then, ref? Cos you sure didn't ge' it any other way!". I immediately grabbed his hand and shook it warmly, explaining that "In over ten years of refereeing you're the first person who's ever accepted that I knew my father" ;-)
