The numbers are generally around 1,000-1,100 or so. "Only" 940 represents something more like statistical variation than anything else, probably. Sad that something like this is an annual event.

It was reported on the BBC and a lot of other news outlets. But the blame on muslims to probably not true. It seems to be a traditional thing amongst Frenchmen.

It seems questionable that it was just Muslims in this case, I can only find proof that it was a mixed bunch of youths including French youths, but in my search I came across this story and in this case it can indeed be place squarely at the door of some French Muslims.

car burning has been a form of social protest in france since the 1980s, and the average annual total of toasted autos is around 40,000, so it's not just a new year thing.

the burnings are more associated with what the French call "housing projects", that is, the more deprived areas of cities (eg Aulnay sous Bois near Paris). these areas typically have large immigrant populations, which might account for the erroneous association with the faith of those who emanate from france's former north African colonies.
