The Magnetic Range Of Neodymium Magnets

I recently bought a small pack of neodymium magnets (9mm x 2mm buttons), as I thought they would be useful for keeping notes on metal surfaces, and keeping trailing wires under control.
However, I have for many years kept an extensive private archive of audio and video recordings - still being done on videotape (audio tape is now almost non-existent, and has priced itself way out of range for my pocket).
I am wondering just what kind of range these very powerful magnets have. Can anybody advise just how far away from any tapes I should keep them?

I would guess you'd be ok if they are feet (rather than inches) away from them.
I recently bought a great big round one 2" across, it's the strongest I could find at N52 for use with some ferrofluid I also bought.

And be careful, they break relatively easily. I used one to pick up another and the attraction was so strong that they clanged together and one broke.

If you want a really powerful magnet, next time you have a hard-disc failure ot you're scrapping a computer, open up the disc and take the magnets from that. They are so powerful that you can have difficulty separating them.

I would tend to agree with AP. Coincidentally I recently bought a rare earth magnet for finding plasterboard nails in the wall. They need to be an inch or two near to latch on to the nail.
