tonsils out

my fiance is getting his tonsils out in a couple of weeks, he is 26 and i heard that the opperation can be dangerouse for adults, i also heard that there could be a long recovery period. I am starting to get quite worried, not about either of these questions i asked, but just about the whole thing in general, is there anyone that has had the opperation that could maybe put my mind at rest a little as i dont want to start my fiance worriying just because i am.

When you say you "heard it was dangerous in adults", dangerous how? why? We used to perform literally dozens of these procedures a week when I worked in an operating theatres, and they are totally routine, in adults and children, sure adults make more of a fuss about the sore throat afterwards, lol, but that is all I remember, plus, general anaesthetics are less dangerous in adults than in children, not the other way round.

My Daughter had her tonsils out last year when she was 24. Apart from the obvious discomfort, the operation itself was fine altho she reacted to the anasthetic and was sick! She stayed in hospital for one night, and had two weeks off work to recover. It was very sore and uncomfortable but she was given painkillers and mouthwash. If you need to ask anything else more specific i'll do my best - so ask away! hope this has helped

Like Impret-Sir has done,  I also work in an Operating Thetre.  It is a routine operation and your finace will suffer discomfort for a few days when swallowing but nothing more than that.  Try not to worry.

I believe there is a risk of bleeding after the operation, and I know several people who have had to go back in afterwards to have the bleeding sorted out. This is just something to be aware of.

I underwent an operation to remove a wart like growth from the back of my throat 6weeks ago.  was in overnight and was in the ward where people who had their tonsils removed .  only problem I was told was the same as me, and  my throat was very for 3 weeks. Once they take you in to op room you don't know anything till you come round in recoverey room. DONT WORRY itswill be fine

ps  Funny they give you toast to very soon after the op to help with healing  and thats the truth

I had mine out when I was 30. I wasn't warned about the possibility of them becoming infected -they did. Be aware this can happen and it should only be sore and uncomfortable NOT painful afterwards.

I had my tonsils removed at the age of 40 having suffered with tonsilitis regularly for 20+ years.  I would recommend anybody with the same problem to have the op.

Although I had a reaction to the anaesthetic which made me violently sick the actual pain after the procedure wasn't much worse than a bad bout of septic tonsilitis.

I was off work for 2 weeks afterwards but mostly to avoid the risk of infection - I actually felt well after the first week.
