nerve regeneration.

can anyone tell me if nerves regrow ,i had a laminectomy in 1993 and it was fine for ten years then i was wallpaper stripping and twisted a bit to much ,i had a funny sensation run down my left leg it was like a lighted fuse it started in the middle of my back and shot down my leg to my little toe. i paid to have an mri scan hoping to get cured and back to work rather than wait six months to have it done on the nhs,it turned out that i had to have two scans as the nurse who done the first one injected me with dye and it didn't go where it should have gone so anyway i went to see the specialist for the results and he told me that i had nerve damage and there was nothing he could do for me ,he told me to stop work as i would not be able to work again. well i did what he said and i have now waited for two and a half years hoping that i would get some feeling back in my foot and leg but i have had no luck so far it is as bad now as it was in the first place .so i would appreciate any advice thanks. ps excuse spelling and grammar (bit thick)

jacko i had nerve damage to my spine and foot..and two years on my foot is about 80% better..and my spine about the same..my nerve damage was caused from lack of b12 so i get injections but also take it in tablet form..i was chronic at one stage i couldnt sit ..bend ..walk..and it just takes ages for nerve endings to grow..of course i was 6 years before the doctor diagnosed me as having pernicious anaemia..which is lack of b12 so it resulted in nerve damage...you need b12 and b complex to keep the nerve s healthy...i thought mine would never recover..and a lot of it is self help as the doctor is sadly lacking..
thanks mullein2,as you say the doc is not any help really he gives me quinine pills for the cramp & i was told to drink tonic water for the quinine i also get pain killers but nothing for the numbness he said there was no cure. i hurt my back on a multi gym in 1983 ,i was in the army and i was told it was a back strain for a good few years then had some tests,i had an epidural,a body cast ,traction and a few other things but it didn't help .when i left the army i went to the doctors and he told me to go to bed for six months ,in the meantime i had an mri scan and went into hospital on the sixth month .like you i could not walk and was in constant pain so when they took a disc out it was great for a couple of months then it only hurt if i did to much work/exersise. anyway i will go and get b12 and b complex vitamins and i will let you know if there is any improvement so once again thank you very much.
jacko..if you see this ..we were in the forces and we had a friend who hurt his back playing rugby for the raf..and you want to claim as much as you can..he did..even getting help from the ssafa..its surprising what he got..at the end of the day you paid into benevelant funds etc...even though our friend had also left the forces they readmmited him for further surgery to a raf hospital...they also paid him a pension at the age of about 35 ..back dated....as he got his injury in the forces..he was mega rich...you want to look in to it..
hi again mullein2 ,first of all i went to the health food store today and bought b 12&bcomplexvitamins,the lady who served me sugested i start off on 500mg of b12 and she also gave me vitamin b complex which also contains 100mg of b12 she said that will be ok to start with and i should let her know how i get on with that combination before i go on to the stronger b12 so heres hoping it works.as far as claiming goes i am afraid i didn't go about that to well ,by the time i had had the operation and decided that i should be entitled to claim from the forces the statute of limitations came in to play ,i contacted my union lawyer and had an interview but was told that there was no case as three years had passed since i left the army.i did contact the war pensions department and they awarded me 10 per month for my back after a lot of investigations by them they accepted blamefor the injury .when my back went kaput in 2003 i contacted them again &after quite a bit of form filling and doctors visits they did put my pension up quite substantially so i am not to bad off in that respect .i didn't know you could get b 12 injections is this from your doctor if so i will ask mine about them he can only say no can't he . i asked ssafa for help to pay for the mri scan that i had but they said i had already had paid for it so i didn't need the money ,they said i should have contacted them before i paid for it and then they may have been able to help .i explained that i had paid with money that was for my mortgage and bills, but that is no excuse so i got no joy there.well once again thank you very much for your help i will come back here to let you know how i am doing with b12 &b complex if you are interested or check chatterbank from time to time and i will leave a message there to let you know if there is any improvement in my foot or leg.all the best jacko.
