How Much Did Your Main Meal Cost Today?
62 Answers
Just cooked Sunday Lunch for four people :
Free Range Chicken
Roast Spuds
Singing Swede
Steamed Cauli
Yorkshire Pudds
Stuffing
Gravy
Horseradish Sauce
All from Aldi - total cost approx £8.50
No huge cooking skills (although it was damn good) - and it was (I think) cheaper than any sort of instant/ready meal option that would have filled us up as nicely.
So why do we get so much noise about "Can't afford to eat properly"?
Is it an age thing? Are the skills just not there?
Or am I just a boring old fart with out-of-date ideas?

I'm v fortunate that I buy chicken (that is pre-packed ready for a Tesco) from the Cargill factory shop - this week I got 8 packs of 3 breast fillets for £6 (would have cost about £28 from Tesco). Meals don't have to be expensive but they do take thinking about and careful shopping.
We had a free range chicken from Aldi £4.99 and it was huge -enough for two meals. Unfortunately the venison fillet that OH bought yesterday at a farmers market, served alongside the chicken was £9.99 for 300 grms so our meal altogether was around £20 for three people but with enough leftovers for chicken caeser salad tomorrow.
And you are totally correct -its a skills thing. Cookery and Budgeting should be mandatory in schools. Some kids waste hours at school doing R.E or a language they will never use and leave school not being able to make a simple meal from scratch.

Yes, dave, i read it in your opening sentence - you cooked for four. A million years ago when my lot were kids and i was unfortunate enough to be unemployed for quite some time - almost 3 years - the only way we could get by was by doing our shopping at those stores that sold (insipid) cheap food items - such as family value beefburgers that were as thin as (and tasted like) cardboard. And i dare say that things are pretty much the same nowadays.
I find myself on benefits once again but only have myself to cater for now, and i am savvy enough to ensure that i have at least one decent meal per day.
