My sister ate a slice of homemade Banana and Walnut cake the other day and she took an allergic reaction. This happened at work. She said her throat, lips and mouth were tingling and she was wheezing.

She was told to go to the nearest walk-in centre ( I am shocked how her employer didn't ring an ambulance). She waited 15 mins to be seen. They said she has had a bad reaction to either the banana or walnut.

She had NEVER ever had any allergic reactions before. She has eaten bananas and walnuts in the past without any problems. So how come has this started now? She is only 29 years of age.

She has an appointment with a nurse next week as they are going to give her an Epi-pen. I am First Aid trained and I was trained that, before administering the EpiPen you have to be 100% sure that the person is having an allergic reaction, otherwise it can be fatal.

Has anyone else got this type of allergy and like my sister, had this developed later in life?

^^^^^ sorry meant to say Harvey - I only got Maxie in February. Here he is now bless him.
Hi, Conne......it's easy to recognise when you are starting to react, and for me how severe it's going to be....get the pen handy just in case...

It's not a sickness......just a pain in the bot.

If I'm having a period when I'm reacting a bit more than usual I just have to decide.....do I eat the box of chocolates slowly....and have lots of reactions.... or do I gobble the whole box and just have the one reaction.... no contest......☺☺
After using penecillin safely for many years as a child/teen I had a nasty reaction to it when i was aged 15. Luckily not so bad as to be life threatening. No one knew about anaphylaxis then, my Mum thought it might be mumps because my face was red and swollen so she took me to the doc who knew at once what it was. Oddly much later, the same thing happened to my Mum when she was in her 70's.
I had a reaction to Septrin when I was young, remember being rushed to an urgent doctor's appointment in case I had scarlet fever or something like that as I'd gone very pink! Not sure if it was the first time I'd had it, was on antibiotics a lot as had recurrent ear infections.

I'm still sensitive to certain related "sulfa" drugs now.

In oral allergy there are linked foods and trees and grasses which tend to cause problems as a group, I had a number of them come up as well as horses, cats, apples, some nuts etc... in the skin prick test.

When I was younger I used to have problems with some cordial drinks which would make me go really wheezy, orange ones, never found out what was in it that caused it and I seem fine with them now.
