What Can I Expecct, Stopping Alcohol.
41 Answers
For many years now, I have always had one or two large V&T's before bed.
Noticed they are gradually getting bigger, and more frequent. Scared me a bit to think I may be alcohol dependent. So, I decided that was it on Thursday, and didn't have anything alcoholic.
Nausea, and subsequently sickness ensued.
Didn't have anything Friday or last night either, but no nausea this time.
Is something lurking ready to happen big time, what will happen now.
Many thanks in advance for nice sensible replies and advice. :)

I am an ex- alcoholic. 30 units a day for 25 years. What to expect? Well, I crawled out of the bottle 13 years ago. My losses include 1 left leg, 1 right eye, kidney damage, to name a few. My gains? I am ALIVE, and I would far rather be alive than dead. To be free of the clutches of an addiction is a wonderful feeling - it's not about trivial physical symptoms - it really is...

Nothing much will happen...you will, however, have a few more pounds in your pocket.... When I stopped drinking I found that going out and drinking only coke was really tedious (most of my social life revolved round pubs and the like) I have found other ways to have fun. Well done for giving up.... I had friends who would never say that they were alcohol dependent but became very ill after drinking a couple of pints a night over a period of years.... everyday drinking is very bad as it does not allow the liver to take a break.
hi ferlew, i would hold your horses for a bit if i were you.
In your post you say tht you 1-2 every night have got more frequent does tht mean during the dy as well? I m trying to estimate how mny-drinks you've actually been hving - your estimate of 25 cl is actully 10 shots of vodka, and if as you sy that's every night, plus whatever "getting more frequent" means, that's a helluva lot to just stop in one go - to go from 70+ units a week to zero is very tricky to acheive, nd i think that probably you might be better doing it under medical supervision.

No Bednobs, I never pour a drink before 9pm, sometimes later.
Went to GP tonight, bared my soul, cards on the table and all that - wish I had never bloody bothered.
Hang on till after xmas, but if it bothers you, come back next week. She will refer me some where, but don't expect to hear for a few weeks.
Still mad as hell, so won't ramble on, thanks again all :)

Well done, ferlew. Just keep thinking all the good you are doing to your liver which is a marvellous organ, and one that can take a helluva lot of abuse, to a point. Every day without alcohol, it repairs itself.
I haven't touched a drop for coming up 8 years now, ( except for the odd sip of champers at a wedding).
I love being sober. Good luck.

Sleep is still evading me, the nausea lasted only a day or two, I haven't felt the need to suck sweets or substitute anything. The only thing I have done is drink cordial in the evening, but out of a water bottle, rather than a glass, which may have reminded me.
This is going to sound daft though, I gave up cigs over 5 years ago, and have been fancying one, isn't the human mind odd?

well done, most people that are dependent on something will just carry on. I think sometimes acknowledging it and doing something about it is the hardest thing. Check out the below link, i watch a asmr video every night before i go to sleep. It doesn't work for everyone, but i find it so relaxing and have a good nights sleep too. if you don't like the bedtime story there are so many more to choose from, just search asmr.
A third of a bottle of vodka is about the same number of units as a fairly strong bottle of wine.
A few years ago my GP asked me how much I was drinking, so I told him and he replied with "ooh, that's a bit too much. I can let you have a bottle of wine a day". I don't think you need to worry too much, but it's great that you've stopped and are feeling ok. It can only do you good.

I am truly thankful mine only rose to approx 10 units a day for the same length of time after reading your post Alien. Many thanks for sharing that.
I think I can now promise I will be alcohol free from now on, I am lucky enough to have lost nothing but a lot of cash, and a few memories of the night before.
I also count myself lucky that I am getting off relatively lightly, considering the amount I have consumed, I can only think it may be because I have always made a long drink of mine with tonic and water (to combat the fizz) and maybe because it was a clear drink. Dunno.
Hope no one minds if I award you BA, it has certainly given me more food for thought, thank you :)

i am in exactly the same position as you right now, i have not had any drink for 4 days now. i drink only beer, no spirits for 30 years whatsoever. tesco has a lot to answer for selling cases of beer 20x budweiser for £10 in my view because i noticed 4 years ago when these big stores started doing this that i bought more and drank more through the week. get yourself to the gym, join a pilates class or do something that helps. im going to gym now and will join a thai boxing class in next few weeks when i feel strong enough.
i was recently on holiday for 1 month, drinking everyday and night, i came back last week and was very sick , my stools were white pale colour and my urine very very dark and im now thinking i have done more damage to my liver, this after my doctor told me 4 years ago if i did not stop i would possibly get liver cancer or be dead in 4 years as i allready had cught a hep b virus which damaged my liver back in 2011.
good luck to you. drink plenty of water at night .
