Margaret beats her fear of cows
BY CONRAD ASTLEY
THE GRASS is greener for a woman who has been cured of her lifelong fear of cows.
Margaret Hewitt was so terrified of cows she could not even bear to see one grazing in a field - and she had to curl up in her car if she passed them up close.
The phobia, which Margaret thought started when she was chased by a bull when she was a young girl, caused great amusement to her family, who used to buy her slippers, toys and jars featuring the bovine beasts.
But now she has put her fears behind her after a visit to complementary therapist Albert Sawyer in Worsley Road, Swinton.
Albert often helps people give up smoking or other addictions, but this was the first time he has come across a fear of cows.
He said: "The technique I use seems to work on eight or nine out of 10 cases."
School governor Margaret said: "It used to be so bad that if I saw a cow in a field when I was on the motorway it would make me shudder."

"I remember walking across a field with a school group of 13 year olds. We were half way across the field when a group of heifers decided that it was time to get curious and (apparently) 'launched an attack' on the main body of the group (who were some way behind me). The resulting flight of a couple of dozen 'tough, steetwise' kids was incredibly funny to watch. Just one lad was unconcerned - he stood still with a big grin on his face and, as the herd slowed and gathered round him, threw his arms around the neck of the nearest animal. Guess which kid lived on a farm?
Cows are beautiful, friendly creatures who just get curious from time to time. "
With regard to trying to cure your fear of cows, there are plenty of websites which can offer advice. (Just put "curing phobias" - including the quote marks - into AltaVista or whichever search engine you prefer). Sooner or later, however, you're going to have to come close to some cows! As a starting poiint, I suggest trying to find out where you can approach just one cow - not an entire herd - which is behind a solid fence. If you phone one or two city farms or rare breeds farms and explain your problem, I'm sure you will find someone who will be sympathetic and helpful. (If you're really lucky you might even end up milking a cow by hand - it's a wonderful experience!).
Hoping this helps,
Chris
