Kids can get the wrong end of the stick when they only half understand something. Adults are not immune either. You can't seriously blame religion for things being misunderstood and kids doing daft things.
Yeah, and these people have a vote! Hence Donald Trump and Nigel Farage's popularity.

And before anyone says this example of religious brainwashing has nothing to do with politics......it's an example of the stupidity of a lot of voters.
OG, // You can't seriously blame religion for things being misunderstood //

You can blame religion for this. If she hadn't been taught about an afterlife, it wouldn't have happened.
What would you blame OG?
The poor girl may have been in such despair at the thought of never seeing her daddy again that she killed herself, whether she believed in an afterlife or not.
I don't think blame is appropriate. Tragedies happen. But explaining things properly and checking on kids is the responsibility of parents or guardians. I see this as a way to have a go at those who have had a family tragedy and a chance of a cheap shot at those who believe that there is more to existence than the physical, to boot.
I have known many people, children included, who have been sustained and comforted by the thought of an afterlife whilst coping with a bereavement.

I have seen a very old man who was dying of cancer looking forward to seeing his long dead wife again. The comfort that gave him was beyond anything drugs could have given him.
No, this is not the result of religion.

This is the result of a tragic little girl living with grief she could could handle.

Christian families telling children that 'Daddy is in heaven ... ' is a standard way to help children too young to understand, to assimilate loss.

So, this is not the result of religion, and the poor family are suffering enough, without the righteous anger of total strangers being heaped on their heads at this time of bottomless loss.
I'm quite sure it wasn't the atheists who told her of heaven and that's where daddy is, so who does that leave? Oh yes the religious lot.
How would she have reacted if she'd been told something different.

Daddy's dead, gone, finished. You'll never see him again.
hc4361 - //How would she have reacted if she'd been told something different.

Daddy's dead, gone, finished. You'll never see him again.//

That is an extreme approach, which no sensible adult would use.

Millions of people soften the blow of death to a child with the notion of angels and heaven, I will probably do it with my grandchildren when their great-grandparents die - the family are all Catholic except me and one son-in-law.

You can never legislate for grief, and what it will do - and hanging the blame on religion is a knee-jerk reaction which helps no-one.
hc4361, who knows? But that isn't the issue. This child killed herself because she'd been taught that dead people exist in a different place and she wanted to see her daddy again. Religion is responsible - there are no two ways about that.
hc, I had to tell my two boys, then aged 10 & 12 that their Mother had died, heaven and afterlife wasn't mentioned, both are quite normal with no hang ups.
We don't know that she wouldn't have killed herself whatever she was told.

^unbelievable!
So as usual religion is blameless for anything that's wrong in this world.

Sorry for going off topic but I can't let that go.
Just who do you think you are?
Someone with an opinion. You?

Zacs-Master //Someone with an over inflated opinion. You?//

There, fixed it for you. ;)
