What Is The Purpose Of Ovaries After Childbirth ?

I overheard my mother telling a friend about her hysterectomy she had over 30 years ago and I was quite frankly a little shocked when she told her friend the surgeons decided to leave her ovaries in. What on earth for? She had a family complete they surely are of no use to her. My mother has always been bordering on hysteria 80% of the time I always remember that in childhood and now surely if she had had her ovaries removed it might have calmed her down a bit !!
