While there are no obvious reported side effects of Iberogast as a whole, some people do have a susceptibility to some of the components of the supplement:

• Chamomile side effects—chamomile is a member of the ragweed family of plants and as such does elicit an allergic reaction in some people with symptoms ranging from minor itching of the skin and throat swelling, to full blown anaphylaxis. If you have ragweed or related allergies, Iberogast is contraindicated for use.

• Licorice Root side effects—licorice root in both large and small doses have been reported to cause fatigue, headaches, high blood pressure and even cardiac arrest in some individuals. In addition, Licorice root contains the chemical glycyrrhizin, which can cause a condition called pseudo-aldosteronism in which you become overly sensitive to hormones from your adrenal cortex.

• Alcohol side effects—some preparations of Iberogast contain up to 30 percent alcohol content and therefore should be avoided in giving to children or to adults who are recovering from alcohol abuse or at risk of alcoholism.

Thanks CAC, I did read those side effects. As I take the antidepressant Citralpram and blood oressure meds, I always am wary of something new.
Sammy what are your IBS symptoms? Maybe other sufferers on here can offer advice.
Antidepressants can cause stomach pain themselves. Take them with a glass of squash to avoid that at least x
Question Author
Woofgang, my symptoms are cramping pain, feeling bloated after eating, though I am not eating much.
Question Author
Pixie, I have been on Citralpram since November and this flare up started about 5 weeks ago after I had a cold virus. I have had IBS for 18 years and don't get it much, but this flare up has lasted too long.
Do you take friendly bacteria? It can help a lot with IBS.
Ok, I would suggest trying squash anyway, as your stomach might just be more sensitive at the moment and those are the classic symptoms for that. Also food tolerances can come and go, so have a think if there is anything obvious- usually wheat or lactose.
Question Author
Rocky, you mean like Activia yoghurt.
Yep. I take it in tablet form from Holland & Barrett. I suffered for years with gastric problems, still do to some extent but the friendly bacteria definitely helps. I've got resistant H. Pylori so take a high dosage in the hope that it'll crowd out the bad bacteria a bit.
Question Author
Thanks I will look into that.
and what have you tried for the IBS?
Question Author
Woofgang I normally take Colofac tablets which work, but they don't seem to be
doing the job now. Oil of peppermint 100mgs and have tried Colpermin.
have you tried buscopan? Its hyoscine which is a muscle relaxant. Quite gentle but I find it helps to ease cramps and bloating. You’d need to check if its ok with citalopram.
I gave up all dairy except live yoghurt and it was amazing the difference.
Question Author
Woofgang, I do have some Busopan but it says about making heart racing so I am wary of taking it.
Question Author
Jenny, did it help the IBS ?
Absolutely, stopped almost immediately.
That was almost ten years ago, and I had been plagued for decades before, and it has never come back.
Sammy get some advice from your prescriber. I don’t take any other meds but it has never made my heart race or done anything much except make me feel a little sleepy and helped with the IBS.
