on friday i have to go to hospital for minor surgery!! and i have been sent a form from the nhs to take with me which i must fill in ..and on this form i have to say what colour i am and what nationality..so i have ripped it up and put it in the bin..i cant see why it matters what colour i am or what nationality..and i will tell them so when they ask for the form..we all have the same body two arms two legs a torso and a head..have they got nothing better to do at the hospital than send out these silly forms at the tax payers expense..anyone agree? also i was told to take an overnight bag in case they decide to keep me in they are having a laugh..i am not staying in! i would discharge myself first..my local hospital is like a victorian poor house..and i am allready pumping myself full of herbal antibiotics just in case anything is lurking!!

There are minor, but significant physiological differences between different races, so what 'colour' you are is a facor when it somes to preparing aneasthetic. Your nationaity may mean English is not your first language, and they may need to ask vital questions and advise you of important procedures, so again, the information is required. Still, you know best .....

Hi Mullein, please calm down, You sound really worried. First thiung with the form is that it ain't the stupid NHS its the stupid government, You don't have to say, you can decline to answer. We have loads of better things to do in the NHS but the Department of Health, irresepective of ruling political party don't seem to think so. The overnight bag is a common precaution, in case anything unforseen happens like a bad reaction to anaesthetic. You could also take in a big badge saying "wash your hands properly before you touch me" I certainly would and I work for the NHS.

Anyway here's a big (clean) hug and get well soon.

andy hughes..i have been in hospital before without filling in forms to say what colour i am or what nationality..and i was just given the same anasethic as everyone else..its some berk doing surveys to see what services they can provide for ethnic minoritys..as i asked this morning on the phone ...so i told them they should provide the same service for everyone and no special treatment..and i wasnt filling the form in..i object to people getting special treatment it should be the same for everyone..the lady accross the road from me went in last week and took her own plate ..cup..knife..fork..spoon..dettol wipes..toilet paper..i shall also take some dettol wipes allthough i dont intend staying longer than neccesary...

my guess is that if they found a particular ethnic minority was treated less often than others, or was having difficulty being understood in English, they would want to know why - were they simply healthier than others, or were they for some reason being deterred from seeking treatment for their health?

So the question might give you the indirect opportunity to contribute to others' health... only of course it's all run by berks, so you should just look out for number 1.

Hi mullein it's me again.  Wish I'd seen this before your dog post - as woofgang's great reply has said he's more than likely picking up on your mood. My dogs always have as I'm quite a nervous person when there's something unusual to deal with.

They've started sending me these forms after 21 years of attending my local hospital!  You'd have thought they'd have noticed what colour I am & what language I speak by now.  Mind you I do talk a load of twaddle sometimes so perhaps they can be forgiven for the language confusion!

All the best for Friday, don't worry those bugs wouldn't dare get you, you can always talk them to death!!  ;-)

robina..its only a local anaesethic..i refused a general i want to keep my eye on them..that form is ridiculouse its got nothing to do with language its just to provide special things like books or food...they should spend the money on some paint and disinfectant......and anasethic" which i cant spell"...is monitored by your weight not race...as i asked ! and i will come home..anyway the form was all in english so if some one couldnt speak english they couldnt fill it in..will talk about the dog in the pet collumn..

robina...the worst part about going on friday is i am not allowed to wear any make up!!! and i allways wear it even if i am just doing the housework..i will feel naked..i am only going to get a skin tag removed and a sample of my skin taken as i have psoriasis and they reckon i have developed a different strain of it ..its only a small patch...i was not going to go at all but thought i had better get it seen to..as i may need different ointment as mine doesnt work anymore..well not on this one patch...i shall be brave and get it done..tommorow i get my b12 injection so it looks like its going to be a week of pain!!..

Oh no horror!!  I wouldn't want to go further than my gate without make-up either.  I'd have to wear a hoody - back to front!  Best to get it over with though as you say.

I was going to ask about your injection, it'll be you who is awake & full of beans & your dog will be totally confused.

Looks like BOO has volunteered for her first gardening lesson which if my memory serves me correctly is scooping the cat, dog, fox etc poop .  Oh & cleaning out the slug traps. Still looking forward...???  ;-)

There's a good reason why you can't wear make up.  They need to see your skin colour (inc lips) clearly while you're under anaesthetic, no matter what type.  If you really can't face going out without it wear a minimum and take some facial wipes with you so you can remove it when you get there.  That's what I did.  I feel it's best to take all the advice the hospital gives you - they do have years of experience at this after all.  Mullein, I personally think you would be crazy to refuse to stay in overnight if they recommended it.  Do you want to collapse or worse at home?  (and yes that can happen after any anaesthetic if you have a bad reaction.)  But having said that, good luck.

lilyfrog..i am not saying what race and nationality i am they can see for themselves..its ridiculouse..anyway i am white of irish descent but dont tell them as its a secret..i dont like people being put into slots and spaces i allways see everyone as the same...a friend of mine gave me as a reference to foster kids she is west indian and the social worker visited me and asked how did i think my friend would cope as a black person? so i got really cross and told her i couldnt see what difference the colour of her was as she was still a person!!so she sat their flapping..its when people put others in these slots that problems start..
