That's a laudable idea jj, I'm sure a lot of peopel would really appreciate some help along those lines, well done.
Apply to any school to help backward readers.
A lovely thing to want to do - local colleges etc may be interested.
I had a look on the Literacy Trust website and it seems like they only employ specialist teachers now....at least in the Uk
Maybe just stick to helping them read, leave the writing and spelling to someone else

Don't be mean.

JJ, you need an Adult Literacy Specialist qualification to work with people who need help with their literacy.
Morning JJ.....I so love you!! ;)

Is there an Irish equivalent to Age UK?

Perhaps you could volunteer with them. Then, you might be able to go and read to some older people who have difficulty.
I go into my local secondary school every Tuesday afternoon to help with their literacy programme for 12 yr. olds with Reading Ages at least 2 years behind their chronological ages. I am a retired teacher, so get on with my groups myself, but the other 2 volunteers are just ladies who want to help, so they get helped with what to do and how to do it.

Individual attention with reading works - quite quickly - the pupils gain confidence and function much better in all classes.

People are happy to volunteer to help Juniors; but not many are willing to take on Secondary. I suggest you contact your local Secondary school. If you are set on adults, then I suggest you contact A.L.B.S.U. (I worked for them for a while) about helping out with some of their classes. Hope you get sorted and can start helping. :)

If that one's for me, paternosters, I would just either telephone or call in at the school, explain that you would like to help and fix up an appointment with the Head of English (some schools may direct you to Special Needs). You will need to get your C.R.B. - but the school should do the application for you.
// hear// ??
I just think this question is a tad ironic.
So sorry
not so easy now just to volunteer.... too many rules and regs..ever though of doing reading books /newspapers..? I used to put news items down for blind/elderly folks when I lived in Herts, especially for scotttish foks..also did voluntary hospital visiting in London....
I must be honest I wasn't sure if this was serious due to the spelling and wording of the post....
I think you have it there MM, so many hoops to jump through now - rightly of course.

I know JJ has done lots in her Community and has also tried other places to volunteer too, it perhaps has all got a bit frustrating.
Ah right. Apologies as I don't know JJ circumstances
It's always hard to couch a reply as you say when you don't know a person too well.

We can only speak as we find after all.
