How effective is this tool as an alternative to surgery to get rid of the bunion

If this is the  splint-type device which you strap around your foot at night to straighten & reposition your big toe for several hours, not very effective in my case.   The plastic on mine split right the way across on the third wearing and rendered it useless.  It wasn't exactly cheap so I never bothered with it again.  I now try to buy wider shoes and find that I have much less trouble with my bunion.
