Canine Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis

Canine Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis - A warning to all dog owners. After reading about this on another group I googled and found lots of information. It is characterised by bright red bloody diarrhea either with or without vomiting but it requires urgent veterinary treatment to save them. The amount and speed at which the bloody diarrhea is expelled is like nothing you will have ever seen before. Dogs can be treated and saved if they are quickly given fluids and usually put on a drip at the vets. There is no known reason for it, although stress and hyperactivity can be a cause. I am sure you would, but should this occur please consult a vet without delay.

Tilly had that last year, Lankeela. She was very, very poorly. It scared me when the vets said, 'Thank Goodness you brought her in today, she needs help.'

We lost one of our dogs to this. I took her to the vet because she was lethargic. We were sent straight to the veterinary college near Potters Bar. Then the diarrhoea started. She only lived another three days. We were on the point of letting her go when her heart gave up. It was horrendous.

My boys had this mildly twice when they were puppies. Very frightening.

I am shocked at how many cases I have heard of just today, having shared it on fb - even among my dog groups very few had heard of it but for those that had it was because their dogs had been affected by it.

I think its one of those things that has been known about but not by a name.
