After many years ive finally got back on broadband and bought a new lappy.
However, internet connection/lappy is a bit slow and 'jerky'. I dont know if problem is broadband or laptop, any idea how to make it faster or smoother?
Broadband is virgin 50G
Lappy is Acer Aspire ES1-531
4GB memory
Would having more memory be of any use?
I havnt got a scooby where technology is concerned.
Thanks
If it's OK, try resetting the TCP/IP stack. (Don't worry - it's a lot easier than it sounds!):
Press the Windows key and X together.
Click on 'Command Prompt (Admin)'
Type 'netsh winsock reset' (without the quote marks)
Press Enter
Type 'netsh int ip reset' (again, without the quote marks)
Press Enter
You should see an instruction to restart your laptop. Do so.
I'm surprised at the large variation between the two tests but your broadband speed is definitely good enough for smooth video streaming, etc.
Try resetting the TCP/IP stack. (If that doesn't work you might need to change the channel used by your router. We'll need the make and model to tell you how to do that though).
AAAGH!!!
An additional thought has just struck me though!!!
Your problem might well simply be because Windows is downloading and installing loads of updates. It's been mentioned here before that new Windows 10 computers can take several days (or even longer) to get all of the updates that Microsoft of issued between Windows being installed on the machine and the purchaser first using it. During that time everything can seem to be very slow (because of nearly all the machine's resources are dealing with the updates). So you might need nothing more than a bit of patience!
Buen, funny eneough ive just had some firefox dowloads and that seems to have speeded things up a little. Had no probs with vids at all just seems to be 'sticky' typing and slow changing pages.
Have tried what you suggested but might be hitting the wrong button.
Is the windows button the one with 4 squares on it? Tried pressing that and X but all that comes up is what comes up if you only hit that button without the X
(calendar etc)
Thanks for your patience with a complete thickie ;-)
I've not got Windows 10, so I'm working in the dark somewhat here but try this instead:
Go to the Start button, then All Apps, followed by Windows System.
RIGHT-click on Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator.
Type 'netsh winsock reset' (without the quote marks)
Press Enter
Type 'netsh int ip reset' (again, without the quote marks)
Press Enter
Restart your laptop.
They say that a picture paints a thousand words though . . . :-)
Thank you for your patience Buen.
It does seem smoother since firefox just updated so I think Ill see how it goes b4 doing anything else (mainly because im scarred of messing up a new 'puter)
However that pic youve posted...ive just got a message telling me that a plugin is needed to display content. What plugin would that be?
Blimey, this is certainly a learning curve...
Thanks again
just noticed that your link is a youtube...funny as it isnt displaying when ive got youtube on now??
These magical boxy thingys are very strange dark devices....
That reads as if you've not got Flash Player on your laptop.
Go here:
https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
Deselect the 'optional offers'.
Click 'Install Now'.
Once the file has downloaded (which should only take a moment or two), click on the 'Downloads' arrow (at the top right of your browser window) and then double-click on the file name to run it.
You could have been accessing YouTube through the W10 app or a different browser, which is why I asked. :)
Can you play Buencho's video in YouTube? A simple explanation could be that Firefox needs you to install a plug in to play Adobe Flash videos but the videos you've played in YouTube are in a different format, HTML.
Fantastic, Just installed and now ive got it.
Thanks guys.
Now Ive just had a message off firefox telling me that its out of date and needs updating? Why would it be out of date on a brand new machine?
