I have had this ruddy chest infection for nearly three months now, and I just can't get rid of it. We are told by the Doctors not to clog up the Surgeries, as its viral and antibiotics won't help.

But I am still coughing up stuff with the look and consistency of putty, so what can I get at the Chemists that might help ?

Its particularity bad at night and is a major sleep-disturber for me.

Years ago, I had some cough mixture from the Chemist, that had creosote in it and it seem to work....can't remember what it was called though !

But you can't buy it in B+Q !

Very little i am afraid, although Night Nurse might sedate you well enough to at least give you a good night's sleep.

Mikey ,,you really need to see your GP, as a routine chest X-ray might help and perhaps an inhaler, steroids or both, may be needed.

I do appreciate the difficulties with the GP system, but you could plead that you were an emergency (if that would help)
Mist Pot Cit and Ammon chlor.

Your chemist may not have heard of it.....bloody awful stuff.
Mikey, I get regular chest infections and my doctor prescribes antibiotics and in a serious case he will add steroids.Go see your doctor.

Actually, I did go and see him on the Wednesday after Xmas. I explained that this coughing had been going on for weeks, so he gave me a good examination, especially of the chest. I also has my bloods done at the same time, as I am a Type 2 diabetic.

But after he had done his bit with the stethoscope, there came a bit of a bombshell. He asked me if anybody had mentioned a heart murmur before !

A ruddy heart murmur I said....I only came in with a cough ! I have been coming to the same Surgery since I was 15 and I am 64 next birthday.

He told me not worry at this stage (!) My Xray is due this Wednesday.

This "Mist Pot Cit and Ammon chlor" stuff...is that available as a patent medicine and yes, it was bloody horrible, but will it work ?
A GP diagnosing a "heart murmur".............of questionable value in my opinion.

Yes, a chemist should be able to make it up for you OTC.

Thanks Sqad...always reliable and always with us !
Potassium Citrate Mixture (Mist Pot Cit) is used for cystitis in women. So adding an expectorant, Ammonium Chloride, will make it into a cough medicine? OMG it will taste vile! Try Buttercup syrup from Boots or rub some Goose Grease ( 250ml £ 2.99. Waitrose) on your chest. Or go back to the GP.

Thanks everybody !
Doubt it's still available Mikey, but Hill's bronchial balsam may give you some relief.

Sqad....I have just returned from a visit to three Chemists, and none of them had heard of "Mist Pot Cit and Ammon chlor"

They all gave me a look as they might have given the three witches in the Scottish Play...." "Eye of newt, and toe of frog" etc, etc !
It may have been popular 50 years ago .
mikey........I might have guessed LOL.
Perhaps you should try "Eye of newt, and toe of frog" :-D

P.S. I remember the days when Chemists had all those other odd-sounding things in jars clearly labelled, lined up on shelves behind the counter.
As I have COPD I often get chest infections. My GP gives me antibiotics and they normally do the trick. However, after my last infection I still felt chesty so I visited my local chemist. The pharmacist suggested Benylin for Mucus cough. I must admit I was bit skeptical but after taking it for a couple of days I was right as rain! I now keep a bottle at home just in case.
