Go through the previous day bit by bit and think about what you did and how you could have done it better an then move on to tomorrow and what you will do then. Use the time you can't sleep constructively. I often spend hours not asleep but not stressing about it means I get enough rest time.
Hope you're Ok Nailit. Trouble is, if you're anything like me, you can't relax during the night hours either. I'm not worried about getting too many hours sleep, I just wish I could calm down and stop my mind racing. I tend to play word games on the tablet which probably doesn't help but it keeps mind occupied. I have ordered some of Ladybirders magic pills, a natural sounding version from UK, certainly worth a try.
I am a terrible sleeper. For me it is a combination of brain not switching off, Tinnitus and internal visual lights.
Even if there is nothing particular on my mind the noise and lights keep me awake for hours. I've got so used to it if I have a couple of nights of relatively good sleep (4 hours) I feel worse than if I had none!!!
I got some Nytol and two different brands of sleep aid from the supermarket and dose up on that. It helped for a couple of days at least.

You're not supposed to take Melatonin if you suffer from depression, though it's never been explained to me why this is so.
Valerian is a good option, as is Montorency cherry capsules - they don't work miracles, but stimulate your own Melatonin to work more efficiently.
Don't drink anything with caffeine in it after 4pm.
Have a turkey and lettuce sandwich - turkey stimulates serotonin uptake and lettuce has laudanum in it.
That's all I can remember for now. If I think of anything else, I'll pop back.

You can take Melatonin in liquid form or tablet, i.e. 1mg, 2mg, 3mg, 5mg or 6mg. I take only one 1mg tablet at a time and only when I can't sleep, not every night. A friend of mine takes 5mg which I wouldn't dare do. The good thing about M is that because it's natural there is no hung over feeling the next day. Murray which strength did you order?
Nailit, please give it a try.

good advice from doctor when i couldn't sleep. Shut everything off, including phone, anything with a light. close curtains so no extraneous light can get in, don't read, that just makes your brain more active. Get into bed, make sure you are warm,
switch off, if still awake after 20 to 30 minutes get up and go and do something, wash up or sit in living room.
go back to bed and try to switch off brain.
its not easy, i have found it works, but it took quite a while
good luck
