Inflammation of tendons and muscles around the top of the thigh...sometimes called Trochanteric bursitis.
Take ibuprofen 400mgms when and if necessary up to every 4 hours.
Not a big deal, but if it persists for more than 2-3 weeks see you GP.

I get Trochanteric bursitis, the pain is awful. A really nasty burning pain, like loads of hot needles, for me and it covers quite a large area.
I'm not allowed ibuprofen (sorry Sqad!) or other such anti-inflammatories though as they affects my kidneys but I had steroid injections in both sides some years ago, guided by ultrasound, which were fantastic! I'd had it for quite some time by then though.
It came back eventually. Had another steroid injection in the worse side, which hasn't been as effective, but it wasn't an ultrasound guided one. I try and avoid being in a position which aggravates it as much as possible. Sometimes even light knicker elastic will set it off. I find it worse lying on the sofa than in bed but I have got a really thick soft mattress topper which maybe helps.

A couple of exercises and how to cope mentioned here too - it's quite common.

I suffered from hip pain for a while, and bought a 5 cms Deep Double Bed "Microlite" Microfibre Mattress Topper, fabulous and like sleeping on a cloud. I also started taking Turmeric capsules after a friend who also had the same problem told me that she had found them to be of great benefit. They seem to be working for me as well, after 2 weeks I noticed a distinct difference.
