I believe it can in the elderly especially if she is also dehydrated
As Islay says and if she has a high temperature
Yes, without a doubt.

UTIs in the elderly are often mistaken for the early stages of dementia or Alzheimer's, according to National Institutes of Health (NIH), because symptoms include:
Confusion or delirium-like state
Agitation
Hallucinations

thank you, she has had constant urine infections, and is undoubtedly dehydrated as she refuses food and drink.
Question Author
indeed this is where she is now, with, just awful..

Confusion or delirium-like state
Agitation
Hallucinations
Call 101 for advice. I am thinking she should be in hospital.
Yes it can.........BUT before we proceed........what evidence have you that your mum has UTI?
Yes it can and they can be quite severe.
Question Author
the doctor is with her now, i live 70 odd miles away with mobility problems, so can't be much use except talk to her on the phone. I can see her going back into hospital.
Question Author
doctor has now given her some antibiotics and confirmed her UTI. Its one thing after the other - not eating, drinking, she has shrunk to 7 stone. She should be in hospital but doesn't look like that is going to happen.
Well that has almost answered my question, but will desist from asking "how did the Dr diagnose UTI."
Question Author
he did a urine test this morning.
Sqad, maybe signs symptoms history ?
Question Author
hallucinations, temperature, phoning family at all hours,
except she has no recall of doing any of those things.
she has Alzheimers and has little or no short term memory.
All the answers above are "suggestive" of UTI, the definitive diagnosis is based upon culture of an organism from the urine....and that takes at least 48 hours.
Yey. Wait 48 hours for the culture, !!!!!!
Question Author
sqad
no idea, its only what i have been told by my sil, who is with her now.
Further to Sqad's post. The culture also helps to determine which antibiotic to prescribe.
Yes......OK....give antibiotics BUT....suppose the culture comes back negative........then what?
Her urinary symptoms ( of which we have no knowledge)may have nothing to do with her mental state.......maybe?
