My manager was a nightmare. She was paranoid that we were talking about her. If I had to speak to a colleague she would stand up and ask "have you a problem" we couldnt go out to together at lunch time. We had to go out separately and meet up later for lunch. I loved my job but couldn't cope any longer and retired when I was 60.
I have a complete *** of a manager, he micro manages, after a recent op he was badgering me to come back until I did earlier than recommended.
But, I have some good friends at work and on the whole I love my job, the salary is OK and the benefits are better than some.
So I suck it up and just keep reminding myself that he does not impact on my whole life but just a small part. On days that does not work I just imagine myself telling him to take a long jump of a short pier!!

From 2003, until 2008, I had the worst possible Manager imaginable. He was a bully, and was controlling in the extreme. Over those 5 years, he steadily reduced my self esteem to almost zero. I left in October 2008, by which time I was on the edge of a mental breakdown.
Only after I left, was he found out and sacked. I blame myself, for allowing his truly awful behaviour to flourish. I vowed I would never let that happen again.
My advice to anybody in the same position, would be to tell and a similar Manager to **** ***, very loudly and very publicly, and leave.
