It is ostensibly to facilitate 'load shedding' which means disconnecting ordinary users if there is too little electricity for essential services in an emergency. But in reality it means they can disconnect you direct from the company computer system instead of having to come out to disconnect you at your meter. They can even do it for failure to pay your bill!
( Though the rules say they have to give you 3 warnings first.)

I have never liked the idea of Smart Meters, we're pre-pay meters so I have a rough idea of how much it costs to boil a kettle etc etc.
Eddie, the older Alba likes conspiracy theories and between him and I we have come up with a few regarding these smart meters, must tell him what you've said when he gets in

The other reason for smart meters is so that you can be charged different rates at different times of the day/week.
The highest rate is charged between 4 pm and 6.30 pm on weekdays.
It is a peak time because people are getting home from work and putting on lights, ovens, heating etc while industry is still using its maximum power load.
You can see how much electricity the UK is using and generating at any one time on this link

It is interesting to see how most of the French power is from nuclear where very little of the UK supply is from nuclear. Most of ours is CCGT combined cycle gas turbine , or just 'Gas fueled power stations' in plain words.
