A real quandary on 1 and 2. I want to put ‘Vile’ for 2d which would make the template for 1a, ???V?D?S? It has been suggested that 1a is ‘CAVENDISH’ which would make 2d, ’E?L?’
I can’t move on from this at all. See below.

Daij. Try pencilling in Isotheres for 20.

Barbarism can mean a word formed from elements of different languages
Isos is Greek meaning same and I presume there is English couldn't find a country of origin for it

I don't think that Isotheres can be right for 20a because I think the 2nd letter is an "E". In which case for "Barbarism appears to excite physicist" is ?E?T?E???. Not sure of the answer though.
