I suspect it varies from person to person.
One thing you can do is stop considering it a mistake. It's an adventure, an opportunity, a new experience during your lifetime. You say you like it, get stuck in, involved, get too busy to brood and reap the reward of adding another string to your bow. (And to your CV for that matter.) It's all a matter of state of mind. The more you immerse yourself instead of analysing and asking yourself such questions, the sooner it'll be familiar, comfortable territory.
