Pebble Poos!

My 2 year old sons drinks constantly, whatever he can get his hands on. So much so that I have an appt with the doc booked to rule out diabetes (he doesn’t have any of the other symptoms). But what is confusing me is that even though he drinks so much fluid his poos are almost always hard, dry pebbles. It’s like his bowel isn’t absorbing as much water as it should. Is there anything I can do? Is it worth mentioning to the doc?

Absolutely you should mention it to the doc.
What is he diet like?
between now and the appointment, keep a record of how frequent he urinates, does he struggle to poo?
As ummm mentioned, what is his diet like?

and deffo mention to the Doc as LB has advised.
My granddaughter was exactly the same, it was painful to watch her struggle. The doctor's only answer was about hydration, which wasn't an issue as she drank loads. Now, almost 7, there's no problem. Good luck with sorting out your son's problem.

I would say his diet is pretty varied. Cereal and banana for breakfast. Lunch is often baked beans on toast or on garlic bread. Afternoon snack is a rice cake or maybe a bit of crumpet and raisins. Dinner is varied (i.e. fish pie, spag bol, chilli, fishfingers) but will include plenty of hidden vegetables. He is particularly partial to edamame soy beans too, but I sometimes find them practically whole in his nappy.

He doesn’t struggle to poo as such but I can tell when he’s popping them out!
Might sound silly but take a pic with your phone so you can show the Doctor what you are describing.

Good idea.
It is the thirst that is the problem and needs to be investigated. Don't dwell on the bowel movements as that may well be normal.
My daughter did pebbles for years as a child without any ill effects. I haven't asked her if she still does as an adult!
If he's anything like me, switching the cereal for porridge would do wonders.
Mamya, with the Bristol Stool Scale I'm not sure a photo is necessary.

A nurse friend of mine once advised that is you see a malteser on the floor of the ward DO NOT pick it up and eat it! :-)
Yes, ignore my daft idea.
Not daft at all Mamya, eating maltesers from the floor is much more daft! :-)
My thoughts are give him porridge or Weetabix for breakfast, and peel a nice eating apple and give him segments to feed himself with as a change from a banana.
Hi Meglet, I can't answer this I'm afraid, but I did just post on your question from 2009! https://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Body-and-Soul/Question687213.html#answer-11205492 and would be very interested to find out how you are now re. hair loss. Just in case you never saw my post. Apologies for writing on this one!

Hi there Scarlett. To be frank I didn’t keep the weight off for long! A couple of years maybe. Then I had my daughter and, 2 years later, twin boys and I put on weight with both pregnancies. The hair loss didn’t last for long but pregnancy changed my hair so much anyway. It’s now so much straighter and thicker than it was and in good condition. I put that down to pregnancy hormones tho. I do need to lose weight now but I would do Slimming World instead of Lighter Life.
