I ask this because on the TV news last night it showed the plight of those sleeping on the streets, but in the very next news report it showed a Syrian family who had been settled in a nice comfortable house with all modern cons, and I don't suppose they are on their own.

Surely one can't be classed racist or homophobic, if they ask why newcomers to this country are placed on the top of the list of priorities?

Why people are living on the streets is a very complex situation. Many have drink, drugs or mental health issues. A home, in some cases, will just eat up cash they 'need' for other things.

Refugees are registered and will go on the list as others do.
sorry but i believe homes should go to top of the list, and that doesn't mean refugees, some people are waiting years for a social housing property, after watching the news report i felt ashamed on behalf of those who are stuck in tiny one room buildings, some of these landlords are making a packet, disgraceful.
It's a points system.

Problem is an address and internet are required to bid on properties.
surely those who have been waiting the longest, those in desperate need, in small, over cramped accommodation should get rehoused, not the refugee who has just arrived, sorry but social housing is in short supply so should go to those who come first on the list.

Are you looking through rose tinted glasses Ummmm?

It made my blood boil watching that last night, with some of those people living in one room, with kids, and only a micro to cook etc.

What about all the war veterans, with mental probs from fighting for the country, yet hundreds of Refugees came in the past 18 months, and were housed in Britain, Scotland, & Ireland.

The Government ministers, need to take a bus tour of what was shown last night, and see what they are NOT doing for its own people, before handing out accommodation to others from abroad, who haven't put a penny in the UK POT,

I'm bluddy fuming!!!!

It Wouldn't be that hard to change the system, for those people ummmm?
This is something that really pees me off. Our own homeless should be considered FIRST, especially kids who have to leave home because their parents are useless and don't care for them as they should.
Join ISIS, come back to this country and you will get a house, benefits, everything.
Thank you for the advice Linda.
This is one of AOG's classic 'If A happens, why can't B happen' when in fact, A&B are completely unrelated and display a profound misunderstanding of how the world works.

Please note, I didn't say it worked well.
A fair number of the homeless now seem to be Eastern Europeans , so it's not just "our own". However, I don't see many -if any- of Asian heritage but maybe that culture is better at looking after its own. Converesely when i went to Spain I noticed that the vast majority were Asians or African heritage so there may be a big difference in the way they are treated by authorities relative to "their own" and/or there is less of a support network.
Homelessness here is a complex issue and I'm not sure anyone knows how to solve the problem it. It's hard to understand why they have fallen out of the system. It is sometimes through choice or through addictions and sometimes it may be that there is little prospect of getting them into homes permanently and then into work. Andy Burnham, mayor of Manchester, aims to eradicate homelessness - it'll be interesting to see if things improve, but I fear he may be swimming against the tide
As I have mentioned before on AB, there are procedures in place to ensure that refugees are "looked after". I know someone in the Civil Service whose main job is to liaise with local councils, social services etc. to ensure political migrants are given the aid they need to settle in this country - this of course includes suitable housing. This person even visits other countries as part of their role. I can assure you this is not political propaganda and this is a real job in a real government department. (I just hope I'm not committing treason by revealing this - or I might end up in Choky !) Obviously, some of these people may have faced real hardships / dangers and I'm not making any judgement about this policy. I just believe that people should know what's going on and make their own minds up.
